There are crossover demographics in many areas of interest, some bigger than others, but it’s a fair guess to say that most guys in the “guy” demographic like to (a) drive fast and (b) blow stuff up. Maybe that’s a vast oversimplification. But it works for this story.
Truth be told, we had never seen Sons of Guns before we drove the Red Jacket Jeep, and opinion even among firearms enthusiasts varies on the devices built and used on the show, but this isn’t Gunweek, so we’ll concentrate on the Jeep part.
The Red Jacket Jeep is the brain child of P.T. “Pat” Muldoon, longtime chief engineer at Mopar and the impetus behind such Moparized Jeep classics as the immortal Power Ram Wagon and the NuKizer, to name just the ones we got to drive in Moab a while back. Now Muldoon is in charge of building cool stuff at V Werks, a wholly owned subsidiary of OE supplier Venchurs. Venchurs supplies that pickup bed conversion you see on the back of the Jeep JK8, as well as most of the rest of the stuff adorning it.
“This is a JK8 conversion so it started its life as a Rubicon four-door JK and was converted to the pickup truck,” said Muldoon, walking around and pointing it all out. “We put our four-inch lift kit with a one-inch body lift, 40-inch BFG Krawler tires and then we updated a lot of the internal driveline components to take the 40-inch tires: upgraded brakes, oversized master cylinder, internals from Dynatrac, 538 gears, our rock rails, our fenders, our front and rear bumpers and our new cowl induction hood.”
There apparently was no V Werks kitchen sink available.
As is, if you wanted this exact Jeep it would cost you $115,000, minus all of those layers of deep red paint slathered on the body. There already is one fan of the show who has ordered exactly this, costs be damned. And there will be more orders, V Werks hopes.
“We’re going to offer a two-door, four-door and a JK8 package with Red Jacket,” Muldoon said. “There’s been a big outpouring and a big interest . . . it opened up a new market where we’re getting a lot of face time with people that are into what Red Jacket did with weapons and vice versa.”

Here’s a new version of the world’s quintessential sport sedan and perpetual All-Star, the BMW 3-series — the designated target for car manufacturers everywhere.

BMW 3 Series Front

There’ll be sleek convertibles, sporty wagons and coupes, and clumsy-looking SUV variants of this design from BMW in the coming months, but the whole of this iteration’s character is embodied in the first-out four-door, the volume seller. At first glance, the 3-series sedan seems softer, more consensual, and less idiosyncratic than the last couple of Bangle-body 3s, but there is a lot more to this car than jumps to the untrained eye. I can confidently predict two things: that it will be another best-seller, and that it will evolve considerably during its production period. The first because it looks very good, the second because it has been cleverly designed to be easily and inexpensively changed visually.
Both ends of the car, from the lamps downward and well into the wheel openings, have molded plastic skin that can be made to totally alter the appearance without the least change to the underlying structure, meaning that an extensive face-lift can be undertaken without the necessity of a completely new crash-safety test program. Variations among models, a useful gambit when there is as great a range of available powertrains as BMW employs, means that an economical four-cylinder-diesel model can have a different face from one housing the biggest gasoline six-cylinder. And although BMW likely won’t do it, the company could probably afford to give the 3-series a different look every year without changing the upper section, glass, doors, or indeed any chassis elements.

As a matter of personal taste, I don’t much like the headlamps touching the grille nor that patch of chrome on the sides of the grille, exposed as though some of the sheetmetal had melted away, but I do find the total composition more attractive than the last couple of generations. And I really like the fact that there is almost no decor on the body sides, around the windows, or all over the front and rear ends, just those small horizontal chrome bars low on either end. All the interiors I have seen, whether at the Detroit show or in photos, are pleasing. Were I to buy a 3-series for myself, I would surely not choose wood interior trim. I love wood as a structural material and think it definitely had its place as trim in cars during the first half of the last century — but no more.

The nice thing about this midrange BMW is that it can easily be configured to suit the desires and requirements of almost anyone. It’s big enough to be comfortable, small enough to be agile and easy to manage in urban situations, and has an available range of installed power that is really wide. Looks like another winner to me.

One of the finest examples of sport and luxury, the BMW 3 Series has consistently made its case as one of the most important automobiles of the last 20 years. Custom refinement happens to be a favorite pastime for its drivers and CARiD.com has the selection of BMW 3 Series Grills to keep them in the game. The front of this ride beckons to images of racing glory mixed with feelings of upscale sophistication. So why not give the people what they want? To match your Beemer’s mindset, we’re stocked with the brands who know your model best, such as Race Mesh. Premier quality for your BMW 3 Series Grill is always our main priority. Find the classic look that always fits your mood. Find it inside the BMW 3 Series Grill that accomplishes the mission.

New design cues, technologies enhance the industry’s top three-row luxury crossover. Buick today introduced the new 2013 Enclave, an evolution of the industry’s best-selling three-row luxury crossover. It offers new styling, new safety technologies, in-vehicle connectivity and a more refined driving experience.
LED daytime running lamps and LED taillamps complement a more sculpted exterior design. The interior is more contemporary, wîth ambient lighting and IntelliLink in-vehicle communications wîth touch-screen control and navigation. (posted on conceptcarz.com) The industry’s first front center air bag system and new dual-flow front struts highlight the safety and performance enhancements.
The 2013 Enclave makes its public debut at the New York Auto Show, where it will be on display April 6-15. It goes on sale this fall.
‘The 2013 Enclave advances the award-winning design, craftsmanship and technology that reintroduced Buick to a new generation of customers,’ said Tony DiSalle, Ú.S. vice president of Buick Marketing. ‘We evolved the interior and exterior design, increased luxury amenities and materials, and engineered purposeful technologies that will make the Enclave continue to resonate wîth luxury crossover owners.’
Enclave saw record sales in 2011, making it more popular than the three-row crossovers from Acura, Audi and Lincoln. More than 58,000 were sold last year – wîth nearly 50 percent sold to customers switching from non-General Motors vehicles.
The Enclave is offered in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models, and powered by a direct-injected 3.6L V-6 and an updated six-speed automatic transmission that contribute to the more refined driving experience. Buick‘s QuietTuning engineering process reduces, blocks and absorbs unwanted noise from the Enclave’s cabin, making it quieter than a Lexus RX350.

The Buick Lucerne is simply not as up-to-date as the competition, but if you’re looking for a quiet, smooth ride and not much else, it may fit the bill.
Like an embarrassing old uncle, the Buick Lucerne, with its soft ride, bland style and clumsy handling, is a reminder of the hole Buick used to be in. And, compared to newer Buicks, a reminder of how far the brand has come. Still, affordable large cars tend to prize comfort over everything else. In that respect the 2011 Buick Lucerne is a decent choice.
Of course, “decent” doesn’t mean “best.” Reviewers say others in the class are more affordably priced and come with more standard features – not to mention more style. Kelley Blue Book says the Lucerne “looks good enough to earn more youthful (read fiftyish) buyers than the previous Park Avenue, but it’s still no kids’ cool cruiser.”
If you’re looking for a car that’s quiet and comfortable, with a reasonably nice interior and conservative styling, the Lucerne will work just fine. But if you want something that’s stylish, a good value, fun-to-drive and has high-tech bells and whistles, you’ll want to shop the competition. Buick Tail lights

Land Rover‘s Detroit snub not a smart move. I thought the days of British carmakers dragging defeat from the jaws of victory were long gone in the modern era of more professional management.
But Land Rover’s absence from the Cobo Hall in Detroit on the day that the Range Rover Evoque scooped the prestigious North American Truck of the Year award must rank as one of the dumbest marketing decisions made by Brits in a long time.
Given the historical importance of the U.S. market to Jaguar/Land Rover, and to Land Rover in particular, the decision to turn its back on Detroit was a strange one in itself, regardless of whether a major award was in the offing.
In past years, Jaguar has exported half of its output to the United States, and in dark times, sales in America kept the company afloat. Land Rover is less reliant on the States now, but the world’s biggest SUV market is still hugely significant to a company whose sales are dominated by 4x4s.
But you also have to wonder why Land Rover’s U.S. operation was not able to provide feedback on the significance of a possible Evoque win to headquarters in Gaydon. And then, how the Gaydon management machine failed to connect the dots and at least consider that the Evoque might be a short-listed contender for North American Truck of the Year honor, making an appearance at the Detroit show essential.
Incidentally, Autoweek editors no longer serve as North American Car and Truck of the Year jurors, instead focusing on identifying Autoweek’s own Best of the Best/Car and Best of the Best/Truck each year. The Evoque won our Best of the Best/Truck award for 2012.

The large Traverse was introduced several years ago as a more carlike successor to the Chevrolet Trailblazer, falling into place below the burly Chevy Tahoe SUV. And with a more passenger-friendly layout inside that makes it feel at times like a minivan if it weren’t for the hinged back doors, it’s a great design for daily-grind family use.
In a word, the styling of the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse is mainstream. The Traverse lacks the chunky, truck-inspired lines of the GMC Acadia or the flow of the Buick Enclave (both are closely related), but its simple design has an air of minimalistic elegance that we find charming. There’s clearly a lot of design influence shared with Chevrolet’s cars—especially the Malibu—including the tall, horizontally divided grille. But next to the somewhat smaller Equinox, the Traverse is a little less adorned, a little more bland. As with the exterior, the cabin of the Traverse is functional but by no means exciting.

The 2012 Cadillac Escalade ranks 1 out of 9 Luxury Large SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 89 published reviews and test drives of the Cadillac Escalade, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The 2012 Cadillac Escalade is probably one of the most recognizable luxury large SUVs on the market, and reviewers love that it backs up its bold, blingtastic looks with great performance. But if your priorities include practicality or subtlety, you’ll want to shop elsewhere.
The 2012 Cadillac Escalade comes standard with lots of power, clever interior features and flashy, unmistakable looks, so it’s no wonder it ranks at the top of its class. Still, auto writers note that while it’s easy to love the Escalade, the decision to buy one can be difficult. Smaller luxury crossovers provide third rows that are more comfortable for adults than the Escalade’s, and many of these models cost less. German and Japanese luxury brands like Audi and Infiniti provide more technological wizardry for a similar price. But no other SUV has quite the same cachet as the Cadillac Escalade.
Overall, if you have the money to spend and want to stand out from the crowd, reviewers say the Cadillac Escalade is a great choice. Just remember to invest in a good theft-prevention system, since it’s the vehicle on the market that’s most likely to be stolen, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute.

When it comes to luxury, perhaps no other American brand represents the concept better than Cadillac. Cadillac drivers are a proud bunch, and with today’s automotive climate constantly evolving, they too desire the kind of custom refinements that elevate their vehicle’s overall perception. An infinitely stronger beam with a touch of flashy style make Cadillac Halo Headlights a can’t miss! Standing tall in the thick of night is often too good to pass up, and CARiD features the highest quality Cadillac Projector Headlights to do it right! Each pair of Cadillac Projector Headlights is designed solely for your ride and will fit right in with factory precision. It gets even easier: Cadillac Headlights come preassembled for ultimate convenience and install in with a snappy plug & play process.
CARiD’s inventory of Cadillac Halo Headlights is brought to you by the finest manufacturers in the world, so you never have to worry about premium quality. Cadillac LED Headlights, Cadillac Euro Headlights, and Cadillac Angel Eyes Headlights are among the favorites – decide which style matches your model’s personality best. All of our Cadillac Halo Headlights are also DOT approved for the level of brightness and safety they demonstrate. Talk about confidence! Light the path in front of you with style and authority. Cadillac Headlights will lead the way.

Reid Brigland, the head of the Dodge brand, said that the Town and Country resonates better with American buyers.

As you may recall, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has said that the automaker will only offer one minivan by 2013. In addition, the next-generation Chrysler minivan will offer optional all-wheel drive and have a nine-speed automatic transmission. Buyers will also be able to chose between standard sliding doors and a people-mover configuration with traditional hinged entrances. Chrysler also plans to take the compact-van fight to the Ford C-Max with a smaller platform as well.

The Detroit News says that the next-generation Chrysler minivan will continue to be built in the automaker’s Windsor, Ontario facility.
